With its rich and varied collections, the Museo Correr covers both the art and history of Venice.

The building that encloses the far end of the Piazza San Marco is known as the Napoleonic Wing.

The Correr Museum is located in St. Mark Square, which construction began in the 9th century but took its current size and shape only in 1177, being paved 100 years later.

The first floor of the Museo Correr illustrates the life and culture of the Venetian Republic over the centuries of its political grandeur and independence.

The armors date from the 16th and 17th century, while the swords, knives, war clubs and maces date from the 14th to the 16th century.

Al centro di tale commercio Correr acquistava e scambiava ogni sorta di bene disponendo nelle sale della sua casa le raccolte divenute in breve motivo di interesse di cittadini e forestieri, affiancando reperti archeologici, armi, monete, gioielli, dipinti, statue a pergamene, codici, documenti, incisioni e rare edizioni. Nel 1922 iniziò il trasferimento delle collezioni museali, librarie e documentarie dal Fondaco dei Turchi  a piazza San Marco, negli ambienti dell’ala Napoleonica e negli spazi contigui delle Procuratie Nuove che avevano ospitato il Palazzo Reale, sede di rappresentanza dei sovrani durante il Regno d’Italia e dove Museo e Biblioteca hanno tutt’ora sede.

Per la decorazione degli interni ci si avvalse del pittore e scenografo veneziano Giuseppe Borsato, attento interprete dello stile Impero e del Biedermeier, che proprio in quegli anni iniziava a diffondersi nelle corti europee.
