COCULLO SNAKE FESTIVAL The festival, set every first of May since 2012 (in the past it took place every first Thursday in May), is a rece… The attraction of snakes seems to be a huge pull factor, and seemingly the whole worldâs major ophidiophiliacs (snake-lovers) often accompanied by their snakes, alongside keen photographers, descend on the small medieval town of Cocullo, 900 masl in the Abruzzo Majella Mountains. Cocullo is known for its singular patron saint's holiday, named Festa dei Serpari, in which the patron saint's statue (Domenico di Sora) is transported in procession covered with many snakes (mainly four-lined, aesculapian, grass and green whip snakes). The origins of Cocullo are closely related to the Ancient Roman town of Koukoulon, situated between Cocullo village and Casale. Cocullo, province of Aquila is a sleepy medieval town around a 50 Minute drive from Abruzzo Villas with a population of a few hundred people but every first Thursday in May, Cocullo comes alive with thousands of tourists to attend one of Italy’s strangest festivals and procession in honor of Cocullo’s patron Saint Domenico di Sora. It is linked with them by the A25 motorway and the Rome-Pescara railway line.

There are three supposed origins to the Cocullo Snake Festival⦠In the C11th apparently Saint Dominic cleared the local fields which were being overrun by snakes, and as a sign of thanks since 1392 the locals parade his statue and snakes around the streets.
