Willem Dafoe, a longtime collaborator of Ferrara’s whose deftness at portraying both tenderness and ferocity make him a very apt surrogate for the director, plays the title character. Tommaso is not out of help: with his doctor, he's searching for the little boy in its inner self, and he regularly visit his mother in the countryside to relax and work. For a long time, the protean independent filmmaker Abel Ferrara has found a way to, if not thrive, then at least produce, while lost in a wilderness of his own making. Early scenes see him taking Italian lessons; getting an espresso and chatting it up with the attractive woman who’s making it for him; cooking dinner with the mother of his child; and working on a film script. They’re fever dreams without the fever. If you’re wondering, incidentally, whether Tommaso is the character’s first or last name, it’s never clear. Ferrara, working with a stately roving camera, and with scenes that feel worked out on the spot, has made a movie of feints and digressions, a portrait of a filmmaker who gets dragged down, even though he’s doing all he can to lead a sober, moral life. The movie is a journey into a someway sick and not evolved mind with no dramatic stratagems. Ferrara is on to something: the chasm that can open up between men and women in an age where the continuity of love has been devalued. Very believable characters . When Napoleon arrives to Elba Island in exile, Martino, an idealist teacher and writer, plots to kill him. The only way he find to get out of his situations is by screwing up its relation, and his opportunities as an actor, while seeking for a meaning to his life.
But the film should have been shapelier and 20 minutes shorter, with a more focused dramatic psychology.
